Pat Marsters, of Pembroke, has a group of volunteers across the South Shore and beyond who pick up donated dresses, sew angel gowns and drop off completed gowns to funeral homes, hospitals and families. I’m so amazed and grateful,» said Marsters, noting that thousands of angel gowns can be made out of the donated gowns. The group provides the gowns to help ease the burden on grieving families who might be trying to find something to bury their child in. They are made to fit a variety of sizes, ranging from a fit for a one-pound premature baby to a child up to 5 years old.

Costa said she worried about having so many leftover dresses after the event, so she wanted to donate some of them to the Angel Babies group that she learned about on Facebook. Dawne Goncalves, one of the volunteers who picked up the dresses Sunday, said that the group’s work is important because the angel gowns or suits are a precious gift to give parents to help with their goodbyes. Other volunteer seamstresses, Lorena Carvalho and Lucia Cefalu, said they have had personal experiences with losing their own child or young family member and that creating angel dresses is a way to give back in their memory. Together they made angel gowns for two years, but Mancuso has since moved on to other efforts, Marsters said. She said they are still in contact with each other, including about the recent gown donation. Never did I ever think it would be like this, and we’re still growing,» Marsters said about the angel gowns group.

The group has grown to 66 seamstresses from the South Shore, as well as some who live on the North Shore and Cape Cod, in New Hampshire and even Florida, she said. They have received donated gowns from all over the country. Marsters founded an organization called Treasures of Our Heart that the angel gowns group and several others operate under. Kick-starting a bag of potato chips is pretty much standard — you open with the double-pincer, squeeze-and-pop technique, start fishing out the prime, full-bodied chips at the top of the heap, and then start working your way down to the half-broken chips in the middle of the bag. A few minutes in you’ve chomped your way down to the bottom and you might think you’re pretty much done. But wait, that’s just the beginning. That’s when you get to the best part, that’s when you get to that last, crumby triangle of potato chips wedged right in the corner of the bag. You know what I’m talking about.
