White strips Lockheed P-38 Lightning participating in the Normandy campaign showing the D-Day invasion stripes. XIX displayed at an air show in 2008 with the black and white invasion stripes. Stripes were applied to fighters, photo-reconnaissance aircraft, troop carriers, twin-engined medium and light bombers, and some special duty aircraft. One month after D-Day, the stripes were ordered removed from planes’ upper surfaces to make them more difficult to spot on the ground at forward bases in France.

They were completely removed by the end of 1944 after the Allies achieved total air supremacy over France. An early P-47D «razorback» Thunderbolt shows the «overlapping roundel» characteristic of their use on American aircraft’s wings. The stripes were five alternating black and white stripes. National markings and serial number were not to be obliterated. The stripes for this two-day deception operation in 1943 were black from the wing tip to a position on the wing where the chord is 5 feet, then four bands of alternating white and black.

This was the same for the upper and lower surfaces. These were applied to all aircraft operating at low level. For single engine aircraft the stripes were 18 inches in width. An earlier use of black and white bands was on the Hawker Typhoon and early production Hawker Tempest Mark Vs. The aircraft had a similar outline when seen from above and below to the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 and the bands were added to aid identification in combat. The order was promulgated on 5 December 1942. This was done for similar reasons as the «invasion stripes» had been used in Operation Overlord ten months earlier over Normandy. Invasion stripes were re-introduced on British and Australian Fleet Air Arm aircraft operating during the Korean War in 1950.

In addition to that, certain Soviet Air Force’s aircraft, such as the MiG-21 fighters, were given two red stripes on their fuselages and vertical stabilisers, also because these types of aircraft were used by the Czechoslovak Air Force. This classic French chicken in white wine sauce is one of my favorite one-pan recipes to make when I’m craving a comforting, flavorful dish. The meal is so easy to whip up and can be ready in under an hour. The dish can be made with or without cream, but it’s just dreamier with the cream. If you’re afraid of butter, use cream. While coq au vin is typically made with mushrooms, I tend to make this chicken in white wine sauce with carrots.

It’s not that the mushrooms aren’t delicious, I just find that more often than not, I’ll have carrots stocked in my fridge rather than mushrooms. Easy White Wine Sauce for Chicken The delicious flavor of this dish is largely derived from the white wine cream sauce that the chicken is essentially bathed in. The poached chicken in white wine sauce absorbs all the scrumptious flavor from the creamy white wine sauce and the ingredients in that sauce. Those ingredients include a classic French staple: bacon! Similar to how beef bourguignon is started, this chicken in white wine sauce recipe begins with browning some bacon. You’d be surprised at what bacon can do for a dish like this. A couple of slices, chopped up and fried to a crisp will create the perfect starter for this recipe. While a white cream sauce has the luxe richness of cream, the crisp bacon helps add a savory punch of flavor.

Thank you so much for coming back to leave a comment! I’ve made this recipe several times and it’s wonderful! I am hoping to prepare it in advance, as a few family members will be joining us. I saw from a previous comment you said this can be done, but I’m just worried the cream will separate or the chicken will be too soft. I would cook the chicken as instructed, sans cream. Then cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to re-heat.

I’ve never ever felt that it was too much cream and I’ve never heard that comment from anyone. The only thing I can think of is that maybe your liquid in the pot reduced too much before you added cream, which is why it maybe felt too creamy. In any case, add as you please! I have made it multiple times and it has always been such a hit. I add mushrooms and use a beurre mainé as my method for thickening the sauce up. I also add some chicken stock as well, to intensify the chicken flavoring.

I love so many of these recipes! I want to serve it but a few guests much prefer white meat. The bone does help with flavor, but it’s not the end of the world if you can’t find chicken breast with bone in. I tried this tonight, it was beautiful. I added mushrooms and spinach, left my bacon in too Will make this again as it was so easy . That’s so great to hear, Shan!
